End OF Empire: The Rise and Fall of Dynasties

Chris Harris - End Of Empire - VFX Reel

Tree Of life - Sculpted and textured in Zbrush, rendered out of Maya and Redshift. Depicting a tree revered by Pegans cut down by Roman Emperor Charlemagne.

Skull Towers - utlising nParticles in Maya, Redshift proxies were instanced on a simulation with negative gravity, effectively pouring the skulls into the shape of the towers. Rendered in Redshift and comped by another artist in Flame.

King Edgar's Skeleton - A forensic examination of hypothetical remains. A store bought skeleton asset heavily modified and textured in Zbrush. Rendered with Redshift and comped with Nuke into a CG recreation of the set.

The opening of each episode had a statue of the title character, in this instance "Attila the Hun". This is a 3D scan of an actual statue that exists today. The scan was completed in Reality Capture and brought into Zbrush for clean up.

Opening Titles - depicting a sword cutting into the landscape with blood oozing out of the Empires that it has divided. Using Maya and Nasa's public domain height elevation data sets. Rendered in Redshift and comped in After Effects by another artist.

The maps sequences were generated with actual modern day height elevation data from NASA satellites. These were converted to 100s of displacement tiles and rendered with Redshift. They were comped together and overlayed with graphics by another artist.

This statue was a store bought model that I completely re sculpted the head for in Zbrush. I grabbed a base 3D scan from a co-worker and then worked it into the model adding hair and a crown. All the statues were surfaced in Substance by another artist.

End OF Empire: The Rise and Fall of Dynasties

A VFX reel of my work on a documentary that recently aired on Foxtel.

The innovative series is a retelling of history that follows Australian Historian David Adams FRGS across Asia and Europe. Seeing him bring to life the family plots and betrayals that led to the downfall of Attila the Hun, Timur, Edgar King of the English and Charlemagne.

I was CG lead on the massive project with most of the work being completely executed by myself from start to finish, utilizing a mixture Zbrush, Maya, Nuke and Redshift with a little help from NASA's Global Height Elevation data sets for the map sequences. The task was to create a virtual room that had 3D artefacts from the time period of the episode floating on plinths with a central table in the center that displayed a holographic interactive 3D map that could be scaled up and down by the presenter to convey movement of armies and empires expanding and contracting.
